Relocation of the Church of Kiruna

Due to advancing mining operations the church of Kiruna, Kiruna Kyrka, was relocated from 19.8. to 20.8.2025

SWEDEN / Norrbottens laen / Kiruna / 19.08. - 20.08.2025 / Kiruna Church is special in many ways. The church is an ecclesiastical monument and is protected by the Cultural Heritage Act, so the question has never been whether it should be moved, but rather how.

The bell tower was built in 1907 and the church itself was built between 1909-1912, as a gift from LKAB to the parish. The architect is Gustav Wickman who designed several different proposals. The bell tower was modelled on 18th-century bell towers and Sami hourglasses. Several different artists collaborated on the church bells.

The church's architecture is inspired by Norwegian stave churches. With its fawn-red chipboard facades, dark tarred interior, materials and inspiration, it has a national romantic character and is a clear expression of its time. The church park is part of the environment around the church, where, among other things, LKAB's first manager and Kiruna's founder, Hjalmar Lundbohm, is buried. His grave and the adjacent belltower will be relocated as well.
